The Secret Agent (1907) London, 1886, and secret agent Verloc is selling pornography, contraceptives, and bric-a-brac in his shop. He lives with his wife, Winnie, his mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, Stevie. Among Stevie's friends are anarchist terrorists (although not terribly successful.) Verloc soon meets Mr. Vladimir, the new First Secretary in the embassy of a foreign country where he is employed as an agent provocateur. His next mission is to bomb London's Greenwich Observatory. The Secret Agent is one of Conrad's later political novels, dealing with espionage, and terrorism at home. It is also a commentary on the social uprisings of the 20th century and the book was also among the most-cited works of literature in the aftermath of 9/11.
