They were at once partners to amateur and professional archaeologists as well as independent interpreters who contributed to the ongoing discovery and rediscovery of prehistoric and pre-Columbian sites in North, Central, and South America. Whether they sought to evoke the past or impose a contemporary aesthetic on its remains, all of the photographers represented in these pages derived inspiration from surviving artifacts of ancient American cultures.
