This preliminary report gives the first results from the Census of Population in England and Wales. The statistics presented here provide new evidence about the population in local areas and have been obtained from summaries prepared by Census Officers. A commentary is included which brings out general patterns and salient features. These preliminary figures will be replaced by final figures in the County Monitors and the more detailed Country Reports due to be published from November 1991.
