Excerpt from Yackety Yack, 1984 The aim of the 1984 yackety yack is to convey a collective experience rather than the experience of individuals. Since it is impossible to document, the life of each individ ual in a community the size of this university, we have instead sought to show the totality, hoping that each individual will find his or her place within that whole. The 1984 yackety yack is intended to be a book of self-discovery. Today most of this work is too current to be evaluated for its ultimate worth. Eventually we will rediscover in these pages ourselves, our world, and the experiences that had ultimate meaning to us. In order to give definition to these specific memorable experiences we have divided the book into seven somewhat arbitrary categories: Documenting the Environment; the environment undeniably has an effect on our daily lives. This section includes the natural, the man-made, the beautiful, the ugly, the kitschy, the classy, the banal, and the exciting. It records the changes in our environment, both seasonal and temporal, not only in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, but as far as the university's responsibilities lie, in the entire state of North Carolina. Life in Motion; this section attempts to focus more closely on the dynamics of student life within the university community. Due to the nature of photography we are restricted to recording instants. But as our lives are in a constant state of flux the task of accurately representing our lives becomes increasingly difficult. However we have resigned our selves to compiling this section of moments with the hope that they are the right ones and truthful to our subjects. Persuasions; there are numerous issues, causes, concerns, and choices that confront students. In this section we have concentrated on the more public arenas of religion, arts and entertainment, politics, and an active concern for our future.
