Volume 2: In the mid-Nineteenth Century, buckskin surveyors set forth along the route of the "Old Santa Fe Trail" to choose a path for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Eventually the Santa Fe Railway's "Trail of Steel" paralleled this historic route of explorers and covered wagon caravans as it crossed everything from the Great Plains to Raton Pass, the highest point on its system. This volume of SANTA FE, 1940-1971, In Color takes the reader on the journey from Kansas City to Albuquerque, New Mexico during this late steam to early diesel time frame.
