This is a colorful and insightful book...Sympathy and compassion flow from the human story de Villiers tells, not from a preconceived bias. It is impossible not to feel for the common folk he describes who have lost all hope, or for the Stalingrad veterans who declare bitterly that the cause for which they fought and others died has proved to be rotten to the core.
