A wizard is forced to play the role of a Dark Lord in a world exploited by a corrupt tourism industry. Derk, a gentle wizard, must manage the annual 'pilgrimage' of tourists from our world who pay to experience a fantasy adventure, despite the devastating toll this takes on his land and family. As the pressure from the cruel Mr. Chesney and his corporate handlers mounts, Derk and his children attempt to subvert the scripted chaos. The narrative shifts between multiple perspectives, offering a sharp look at the intersection of magic and commercial exploitation.

This work is widely regarded as a clever subversion of high fantasy tropes that balances humor with a biting critique of consumer culture. Readers often highlight the ingenuity of the world-building and the depth of the character dynamics within the wizard's family. The narrative is frequently praised for its ability to maintain a lighthearted tone while addressing serious themes of exploitation and environmental degradation. It stands as a notable example of the author's skill in blending whimsical elements with sharp social commentary.
