A bumbling private investigator finds himself entangled in a series of absurd and compromising situations while attempting to solve a case. The protagonist navigates a world defined by the permissive and chaotic social landscape of the 1970s, where his professional incompetence is frequently overshadowed by his pursuit of romantic entanglements. Faced with eccentric clients and escalating misunderstandings, he must rely on luck rather than skill to survive the investigations. The narrative is delivered through a lighthearted, first-person perspective that emphasizes the farcical nature of his daily operations.

This work is characteristic of the popular sex comedy genre that flourished in British paperback publishing during the 1970s. The narrative relies heavily on the juxtaposition of the gritty private eye archetype with the protagonist's own ineptitude and preoccupation with social escapades. Readers familiar with the series likely appreciate the consistent tone and the nostalgic, campy portrayal of the era's social mores. The book functions primarily as a light entertainment piece, prioritizing humor and farce over complex mystery plotting or character development.
