A humble painter's obsession with a single leaf threatens to consume his life and his relationships. Niggle, a painter of modest talent, is consumed by the desire to capture the perfect image of a particular leaf, a process that requires him to travel to a fantastical realm. His artistic pursuit, however, comes at the expense of his obligations and his relationships, particularly with his neighbor, Parish, and the demanding but ultimately fair figures of authority he encounters in his afterlife.

J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Leaf by Niggle' is widely regarded as a profound and insightful exploration of the artist's struggle and the nature of creation. Critics often highlight its allegorical depth, seeing it as a reflection of Tolkien's own experiences and philosophies regarding his work, particularly 'The Lord of the Rings'. The story's blend of the mundane and the fantastical, coupled with its themes of sacrifice and eventual artistic fulfillment, resonates deeply with readers. It is frequently praised for its concise yet powerful narrative, offering a unique perspective on the creative impulse and its place in the wider world.
