A minor official in the Japanese town of Titipu is mistaken for the Mikado's son and must navigate a series of absurd laws and romantic entanglements to survive. The Lord High Executioner, Ko-Ko, faces execution for flirting with the Emperor's son, Nanki-Poo, who has disguised himself as a wandering minstrel to escape an arranged marriage with the elderly Katisha. To avoid his own demise and facilitate Nanki-Poo's union with his true love, Yum-Yum, Ko-Ko agrees to be beheaded, but a clever deception involving a stolen head and a temporary reign of terror ensues.
