This series focuses on the latest research in physicochemical biology, presenting papers by eminent experts in the former Soviet Union, and should be of particular interest to research scientists who do not read Russian.Various growth responses of roots with respect to the mechanisms of biological activity of chemicals have been extensively documented. This review discusses the cellular aspects of these phenomena summarizing data collected by the author concerning the biological activities of inhibitors of protein and nucleic acid synthesis platinum complexes exhibiting cytostatic activity and other compounds. Particular attention is paid to the progress made in interpreting the cellular organization of root growth on the basis of our knowledge concerning the action of chemicals. The validity of root testing for screening the biological activities of various compounds is also considered.
