Quest is a three level reading and writing series that prepares ESOL students for the rigors of college academic coursework. This series differs from other content-based ESOL series in that it incorporates material typically covered in college-level general education courses and contains a variety of academic areas including biology, business, U.S. History, psychology, art, cultural anthropology, American literature and economics. Quest parallels and accelerates the process that native English speakers go through when they study core subjects in high school. By previewing typical college course material, this book helps students get "up to speed" in terms of both academic content and language skills. The Reading and Writing books combine high-interest material from newspapers and magazines with traditional academic source materials such as textbooks. The series is comprised of three levels: Book 1: High-Beginning - Low- Intermediate, Book 2: Intermediate - High Intermediate, and Book 3: Low-Advanced - Advanced. There is a companion Quest: Listening and Speaking series for same three levels.
This book investigates how to bridge the gap between intermediate English proficiency and the complex linguistic and content-based demands of college-level academic coursework. The authors, Laurie Blass and Pamela Hartmann, utilize a curriculum design that integrates authentic academic source materials with high-interest journalism to simulate the intellectual environment of a university. The framework focuses on accelerating language acquisition by exposing students to foundational concepts from diverse disciplines such as biology, psychology, and economics.
