Alles In Allem (All in All) is an exciting new intermediate German program for instructors who want a smoother transition from first to second year courses. Alles In Allem is also an excellent choice for students who have not yet reached intermediate proficiency levels. Designed to be completed in one semester or 2 quarters, Alles In Allem consists of three components: a Reading and Activities text, a brief Grammar Manual and a unique Language Laboratory program. The main component of Alles In Allem is the Reading and Activities text which contains high-interest readings surrounded by a variety of pre- and post-reading exercises and interactive activities. The brief Grammar Manual is coordinated with the main text and can either be used in class or assigned as homework. The Language Lab program is unique in including the readings from the main text on the recorded tapes so that students can listen along as they read the selections. The lab tapes also contains additional material for listening practice, coordinated to the printed Guide to the Audiocassette Program.
This text investigates the pedagogical challenge of bridging the gap between first-year and second-year German language instruction. Authors Beate Engel-Doyle and Jeanine Briggs present a structured program designed to accelerate intermediate proficiency through a multi-component approach. The framework integrates reading comprehension, grammar review, and auditory practice to create a cohesive learning environment for students transitioning to higher-level language study.
