At midnight on January 13, 1838, Joseph Smith rode out of Kirtland, Ohio, pursued by armed men. The horse the Prophet rose was his favorite-- a twelve-year-old stallion called Old Charlie. Neither Joseph nor Charlie would ever see Kirtland again. Over the coming months they would travel eight hundred miles with the Prophet's family through snow and bitter cold, and finally across the frozen Mississippi River, to a new home in a place called Far West.
