Published in 1850, White Jacket is both a retelling of Melville's adventures as a seaman on the man-of-war United States and an exposé of naval practices of which the public was only dimly aware. His portrait of the autocratic, male regime aboard the Neversink accurately records the cruelties and injustices of the world at large. This edition contains explanatory notes and a glossary of sailing terms.
