George Szirtes's seventh book of poems, Blind Field--a photographic term--contains poems which show his fascination with photography. Focusing on transit and impermanence, characters move in a fragmented way until fixed in the lens of the camera. A middle section consists of a long poem, Transylvana--in which the poet revisits his mother's former home in Cluj-Napoca--is a depiction of the life of an anonymous relative ("Virgil"), and the country's ominous leader. Powerful and observant, Blind Field is a triumphant contribution to contemporary English poetry.
