Since its original publication in 1961, the Synopsis has become the standard reference on the taxonomy of Indian avifauna and was the basis for Ali and Ripley's classic 10-volume Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan. This second edition correlates and summarizes all current advances in our knowledge of the systematics, ecology, and distribution of Indian birds. The sequence of orders, families, etc., follows current international practice.
