This work serves as the definitive taxonomic reference for the avifauna of the Indian subcontinent, addressing the need for a comprehensive, updated catalog of species distribution and classification. Sidney Dillon Ripley, a distinguished ornithologist, synthesizes decades of field research and systematic study to provide a structured framework for identifying and categorizing bird species across India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The text functions as a foundational resource for researchers, integrating historical data with contemporary advancements in avian systematics and ecology.

Ornithologists and researchers consistently cite this volume as a foundational reference for South Asian avian studies. Experts highlight the text for its rigorous systematic approach and its historical importance as the precursor to more expansive multi-volume handbooks.
