Lady Miranda has been raised in poverty. Through the machinations of her stepmother and father, she is sent to be the bride of an embittered duke, a widower who has been persuaded by his dying mother that he needs to marry again. Miranda does her best to be a good wife, even as the duke’s younger brother plots against the new couple.
