Stem cell research is expensive, and whether the government should help pay for it has been a long-standing part of the controversies surrounding it. The presidential administrations of the early twenty-first century have taken dramatically different positions on whether the government should fund embryonic stem cell research, and each has been met with varying forms of opposition.
