Orientalism is an historical term used to describe the West's fascination with an assimilation of the ideas and motifs of the East. This book and the exhibition it accompanies, explore Orientalism as it has been expressed in Western apparel since the 18th century. Of the many objects transported from East to West, exotic textiles and apparel have been among the most influential and have inspired many designers in Europe and the United States.
