Kathryn Callaghan, a contemporary author, finds herself deeply immersed in the life of 18th-century painter Élisabeth Vigée-LeBrun, a figure reviled for her association with Marie Antoinette, as she completes her novel about the artist. Haunted by the narrative she has crafted, Kathryn must transition from the historical world she has brought to life back to her own reality in 2012.
