This book investigates the motivations and lived experiences of North American volunteers who traveled to Nicaragua to participate in agricultural labor during a period of significant political upheaval. Author Jeff Jones compiles a collection of primary source materials to document the human element of international solidarity work. By focusing on the perspectives of the volunteers themselves, the text provides a granular look at the intersection of foreign labor and Nicaraguan domestic policy. The work serves as a record of the social and political climate in Nicaragua as observed by outsiders during the harvest seasons.

Experts and readers recognize this work as a valuable primary source for understanding the grassroots internationalism of the era. The text is frequently cited for its ability to humanize the political complexities of the region through direct, personal testimony.
