Abstract: The current impact of major stressors on US male blue-collar workers is explored for managers and supervisors. Starting with a description of objective and subjective work stressors (e.g., inadequate compensation, work hazards), the material moves on to a discussion of labor's role as both a source and resolver of blue-collar stress. Physical and mental health issues regarding blue-collar stress are examined, and stress created by new ecological and environmental controversies are discussed. A discussion of several current or prospective reforms is included, as well as inputs from blue-collar workers concerning various stress scenarios. (wz).
This book investigates the multifaceted impact of workplace stressors on the physical and mental well-being of male blue-collar workers in the United States. Arthur B. Shostak draws upon sociological research and direct worker testimonies to analyze how economic conditions, physical hazards, and environmental controversies contribute to occupational strain. The text provides a framework for managers and supervisors to identify these stressors and evaluate potential institutional reforms to mitigate their effects.
