From the This book focuses on the two decades of political life in Bolivia, from the overthrow of civilian president Victor Paz Estenssoro in November of 1964 until his return to office in August of 1985. It was a period in which the military dominated national politics and acted as the major base of support for various governments. During these years military authoritarianism was not unique to Bolivia but part of a wider shift to authoritarian modes of governance that occurred throughout South America in the 1960s and 1970s.
