The Massachusetts General Hospital, 1955-1980xxii, 410 pp. First edition. "The recognized need for hospital facilities in Boston at the turn of the nineteenth century came to a head in 1810 when a circular letter to raise construction funds was prepared by Doctors James Jackson and John Collins Warren of the Harvard Medical School. This letter said in part: "Those who are educated in New England have so few opportunities of attending to the practice of physics that they find it impossible to learn some of the most important elements of the science of medicine until after they have undertaken for themselves the care of the health and lives of their fellow citizens...A hospital is an institution absolutely essential to a medical school." These two men became the first chiefs of the medical and surgical services when the hospital was opened in 1821. Thus began an association of two institutions that has flourished for these many years so that no history of the hospital would be complete without recognition of the time-honored relationship of these two institutions.
