This is the story of how a young American - that would be the author - psychologically survived the absurd waste of time, money and life that was the Vietnam War. In the spirit of full disclosure, this is not a What did you do in the war, Daddy sort of book. This is a How I best remember getting through it sort of book. To that end, the tongue engages the cheek just enough to attempt to take the edge off the deadly seriousness of the whole thing. Everything told here is true and happened in the manner described. I should point out, however, that I report events as if I were Pogo - Walt Kelly's brilliantly conceived observer of the ebb and flow of things. Through Pogo's eyes things always looked ridiculous.
This book chronicles the author's personal psychological survival through the Vietnam War, focusing on how he navigated the conflict rather than a typical recounting of wartime experiences. Noel McKeehan, the author, presents his experiences in Vietnam not as a boastful account, but as a testament to his methods of enduring the war. He employs a humorous and slightly detached perspective, akin to Walt Kelly's Pogo, to highlight the inherent absurdity and tragic waste of the conflict. The narrative asserts that all events described are true and occurred as reported, offering a unique lens on a tumultuous period.
This memoir is characterized by its unique approach to a difficult subject, using humor and a detached perspective to process the trauma of war. The author's stated intention is to share how he survived, rather than to detail combat actions, positioning it as a personal reflection on resilience. The narrative's reliance on a Pogo-esque viewpoint suggests a critical yet engaging tone, aiming to make the heavy subject matter more accessible. The emphasis on truthfulness, combined with the author's distinct voice, promises a candid and memorable account of a soldier's internal experience.
