John Bowers was raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, during the Great Depression and the World War II era. After high school he enlisted in the US Armed Forces and was sent to Korea where he served for slightly over a year. In My Korea, a near beardless boy finds himself in a country he has no knowledge of and little idea why he’s there. The guns of World War II are newly quiet yet he wears the uniform of a soldier. Commanding officers seem to know as little as he. He and fellow soldiers learn about each other as much as they learn about the country they are assigned to occupy. In its telling humor is the salve that lessens pain and anguish. It is a strange period in history, one that seems to be repeated as recently as now.
