This work investigates the professional life and investigative methodologies of John Wilson Murray, Canada's first government detective, to understand the evolution of criminal investigation in the late 19th century. The author, John Hubert Plunkett Murray, compiles the accounts of his father’s career, utilizing primary case files and personal recollections to document the transition from rudimentary policing to systematic forensic inquiry. The text serves as both a biographical record and a historical archive of the legal and social challenges faced by law enforcement in early Canadian society.

The subject matter points to a significant historical document that provides a rare, primary-source look at the origins of professional detective work in Canada. The text is regarded as a foundational resource for historians and true crime researchers interested in the development of North American law enforcement practices.
