This memoir investigates the strategic and personal challenges faced by the commander of the British naval task force during the 1982 Falklands War. Admiral Sandy Woodward, with the assistance of Patrick Robinson, provides a detailed account of the logistical, political, and tactical pressures inherent in commanding a fleet thousands of miles from home. The narrative utilizes personal logs and official records to reconstruct the decision-making processes that defined the conflict.

This work is regarded as a definitive primary source for understanding the naval perspective of the Falklands War. Its clinical focus on command decisions and the realities of modern maritime combat makes it a significant text for military historians and students of naval strategy.
