A long-buried secret regarding a fateful summer in the 1960s threatens to dismantle the lives of two sisters and the artist who captured their likeness. Alice and Natalie, sisters separated by temperament and adolescence, find their family dynamics irrevocably altered by an enigmatic painter during a lakeside holiday. Decades later, the artist's friend attempts to unearth the truth behind the portrait, forcing the characters to confront the consequences of their past choices. The narrative shifts between the tension-filled summer of the past and the investigative efforts of the present, revealing how hidden desires and manipulations can echo through generations.

This novel presents a deliberate study of how past traumas influence the trajectory of adult lives. The prose emphasizes the atmospheric tension of the lakeside setting, grounding the mystery in the specific dynamics of the two sisters. Readers often note the focus on the artistic process as a metaphor for the characters' own attempts to frame their reality. The narrative structure effectively builds curiosity regarding the central secret without relying on conventional thriller tropes. The work functions as a meditation on the permanence of choices made during the formative years of youth.
