Getting out of the military can be one of the most challenging and stressful things a veteran does. Society is different from what veterans imagine when they separate. Most veterans I see as a therapist struggle because of unrealistic expectations of civilian society. Veterans feel they deserve respect and to be treated in high regard because they were told they would when preparing to get out. Veterans are indeed treated differently, contrary to how they expect. 51 Issues Veterans Face gives examples of how our expectations of society differ from what we truly face when we get out.
