Most of the words we recognize are so far changed, that they seem to suit the hypothesis of an early separation from the main stock, and subsequent degradation. We use the latter word, of course, in a philological and technical sense; hut it may not be out of place to remark that the tribes of the Niger Delta would appear the socially and morally inferior to the Bantu of the Central African plateau, and to suggest the question whether long residence in a notoriously unhealthy region can have contributed to this result. We much regret to have to record the death of Dr. Friedrlch MHIler, Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology at the University of Vienna, which took place May 24 inst. at the age of 64. He is best known through his "Grundriss der Sprachwissenschaft" and his "Allgemeine Ethnographie" and "Ethnologischer Bilderatlas".
