By the painstaking and praiseworthy labour of compiling and editing those two volumes of Indices, which contain a summary of the Kitab al-Aghani in its different bearings and directions, Professor Quidi and with him his main collaborator, Professor Brunnow, have put Arabic Students under a lasting obligation. (See p. 125). A journey to Safa and the Gebel ed-Druz carried out in 1899 and 1900 enabled two French scholars, M. Dussaud and M. Macler to visit a number of spots abounding in Greek, Latin, Arabic, Nabatean, and especially Safaitic inscriptions. Not only were many of the texts, already copied and published by de Vogue, Waddington and other travellers, verified and their readings improved, but the authors were also fortunate enough to discover a mass of new material which they have now laid before Semitic scholars in a handy form, the transliterations and renderings of the texts being followed by 17 plates containing facsimiles of over 400 Safaitic graffiti. This excellent work will not fail to increase our knowledge of the Safa dialect, the more so as the results of Dr. Butler's expedition (see above p. 58) may soon be compared with those obtained by MM. Dussaud and Macler. (See p. 124). An interesting work under the title "Origens Chaldean as da Jndaismo" has appeared from the pen of M. J. de Campos Noraes.
