Since the last edition of this important and respected book, there have been numerous advances in the field of autonomic disorders. Autonomic failure is now regarded in association with a broad range of disorders such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and alcoholism. The choice of investigative techniques has widened, and includes neuropeptide measurement, MRI scanning and PET scanning. Reflecting this, the new edition has nineteen new chapters and all other chapters have been updated. The book describes new studies, for example in the use of microneurography and the counting of autonomic nerve fibres. Recently recognized causes of autonomic neuropathy such as HIV infection and dopamine beta hydroxylase deficiency are discussed. Two new chapters deal with the theory and practice of pain management.
