Fully updated, including data up to September 1999, the London Dysmorphology Database (LDDB) now contains information on 3030 non-chromosomal, multiple congenital anomaly syndromes. There are also 28,323 references. LDDB arose from the need to diagnose and provide genetic counselling for the hundreds of rare syndromes which are associated with mental retardation and congenital nomalies. Work began on the database in 1981 with the intention of ascertaining the majority of reported syndromes in the literature. All the major reference works are consulted, as well as all journals that might contain a report of multiple congential anomaly syndromes.
This database serves as a comprehensive diagnostic tool for identifying rare, non-chromosomal multiple congenital anomaly syndromes. Dr. Michael Baraitser and Robin Winter developed this resource to assist clinicians in genetic counseling and the identification of syndromes associated with mental retardation. The project aggregates data from extensive literature reviews conducted since 1981 to provide a centralized reference for medical professionals.

Scope Limits
Medical professionals and geneticists historically utilized this database as a foundational reference for rare syndrome identification in the late 1990s. Experts note that the software requires specific legacy hardware configurations to function as intended.
