Cassy lives with her granny, until the night that she hears strange footsteps coming into their flat. The next morning, she is packed off to her mum's - a squat in London that her beautiful, simple mother shares with a couple of actors. Cassy does her best to throw herself into her mother's life, even agreeing to take part in their travelling show called 'Wolf'. But she can't ever get rid of the feeling that something is following her, and something bad is going to happen. Her fear grows as time passes, until Cassy knows she must face up to her past: who her father is, why he left and where he has gone. What she doesn't know is that some questions are better left unanswered...
After a series of unsettling events at her grandmother's home, Cassy is forced into a new life in London where she must confront a persistent, encroaching sense of danger. Cassy attempts to integrate into her mother's unconventional lifestyle among a group of actors, but her internal stability is compromised by the suspicion that she is being stalked. As she participates in a theatrical production titled 'Wolf', the boundaries between her performance and her reality begin to blur. The narrative follows her psychological descent as she seeks to uncover the truth about her absent father, navigating the tension between her desire for closure and the potential consequences of her discovery. The story utilizes a suspenseful framework to examine the impact of past trauma on a developing adolescent identity.
Readers frequently highlight the unsettling atmosphere that permeates the narrative from the opening chapters. Discussion often centers on the effectiveness of the author's portrayal of adolescent paranoia and the way the theatrical elements mirror the protagonist's internal conflict. Critics often note the precise pacing, which allows the suspense to build steadily without relying on excessive action sequences. Many readers appreciate the focus on character development over traditional thriller tropes, finding the exploration of family history particularly engaging. The book is often cited for its ability to maintain a sense of unease that lingers long after the final page is turned.
