The first ever English-language collection of essays on the novels of Maryse Conde, a prominent Caribbean literary and cultural figure. The 14 essays are grouped thematically; topics range from translation (language, culture, ideology) to the black diaspora and the search for origins and identity. A number of the interpretations highlight the importance of history and memory in Conde's work. Also includes a bibliography of Conde's works and secondary literature on her writing.
