DECHELETTE's masterly Manuel d'archeologie prehistorique celtique et gallo-romaine is still the only comprehensive study of Celtic archaeology. The scope of my book is narrower: it is confined to the early phase, which covers roughly the fourth and third centuries B.C., and part of the fifth and second, and its subject is not the civilization of the Gauls, but their art. I have tried to link Early Celtic art with the arts of Europe and Asia which nourished it.
This work investigates the stylistic development and cross-cultural influences defining the early phase of Celtic art during the fourth and third centuries B.C. Paul Jacobsthal, a distinguished scholar in the field of classical and Celtic archaeology, provides a rigorous analysis that distinguishes the artistic output of the Celts from the broader scope of their general civilization. By situating these artifacts within the context of contemporary European and Asian artistic traditions, the author establishes a framework for understanding the aesthetic evolution of the period.
What You Will Find
Experts frequently cite this text as a foundational reference for the study of La Tène art and its historical context. Readers often note the academic density of the prose, which serves as a primary resource for researchers and students of classical archaeology.
