This work investigates the complex intellectual relationship between science and religion as articulated in the writings and personal philosophy of C. S. Lewis. Alister E. McGrath, a noted scholar of theology and intellectual history, utilizes a rigorous analytical framework to examine how Lewis navigated the tension between modern naturalism and traditional religious belief. By situating Lewis within the context of his academic background in medieval and Renaissance literature, the author demonstrates how Lewis integrated scientific criteria into his apologetic arguments. The text argues that Lewis anticipated modern philosophical methodologies, such as inference to the best explanation, long before they were formally codified in academic discourse.

Experts recognize this text as a foundational study for understanding the intellectual depth of C. S. Lewis beyond his popular fiction. Readers frequently note the academic density of the prose, which provides a sophisticated look at the intersection of theology and scientific history.
