This book presents a general understanding of microbial metabolism and growth in bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, rotifers, and other common microorganisms and how the different microorganisms react in mixed cultures in the natural environment. The information flows from the different microorganisms to their application in engineering designs related to water treatment, the collection and handling of municipal and industrial wastewaters, solid waste processing, air contaminants, and hazardous wastes. Emphasis has been placed on the overall energy transformations required to convert environmental pollutants to materials that can be safely returned to the environment.
