The political events of annus mirabilis 1989 marked a rare turning point in world history, but the significance of the year for German literary history is unique. This collection investigates the unique cultural and political legacy of East German theatre following the collapse of the German Democratic Republic in 1989. David W. Robinson and various contributors analyze how the specific socio-political environment of the GDR shaped its theatrical output and how those traditions persisted in the post-unification cultural landscape. The text serves as a retrospective examination of a closed literary era, utilizing essays, memoirs, and plays to map the evolution of a state-sponsored artistic domain.
What You Will Find
Experts identify this collection as a significant early effort to document the theatrical history of the GDR before the nuances of that era faded from the contemporary discourse. Readers often note the academic density of the prose, which provides a specialized look at a niche but vital period of European cultural history.
