Hero da Costa is the only child of John da Costa, a former black slave from the West Indies. Her white mother is the daughter of a Jewish merchant who owns a pub. She died giving birth to Hero. Hero's father has been taken away to be sent back to the slave plantation on Barbados, the pub is to be sold, and Hero has been forced to move in with her mother's family in the East End of London. They despise her for being half black and treat her cruelly. But Hero has fighting spirit and determination to rescue her father. But first she has to escape from the clutches of her aunt and uncle and their villainous henchmen. Set in the early nineteenth century, this is an exciting novel with an exciting appealing heroine, over six feet tall, given to fighting back, often literally. Catherine Johnson is Jamaican/Welsh and is the author of the recently published In Black and White.
After her father is forcibly removed to be returned to a plantation in Barbados, a young woman named Hero da Costa must navigate the hostile environment of her relatives' home in London to secure his rescue. Hero, a biracial woman living in the early nineteenth century, faces systemic prejudice and familial abuse following the death of her mother and the abduction of her father. She possesses a physical stature of over six feet and a combative nature that she utilizes to resist the cruelty of her aunt and uncle. The narrative follows her efforts to escape her captors and reclaim her autonomy while pursuing the goal of saving her father. The story is presented through a third-person perspective that emphasizes the social constraints of the era.
Readers frequently highlight the protagonist's assertive nature as a defining element of the narrative. Discussion often centers on the author's ability to weave historical context regarding race and class into a fast-paced adventure. Critics note that the book balances the harsh realities of the period with the protagonist's physical and emotional strength. The pacing is generally described as brisk, keeping the focus squarely on Hero's immediate survival and her mission to save her father. Many readers appreciate the inclusion of a strong, unconventional heroine who actively fights against the injustices imposed upon her.
