This work investigates the organizational structure, modernization efforts, and strategic capabilities of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in the early 21st century. Dennis J. Blasko, a former U.S. Army officer and military attaché with extensive experience in the region, provides a comprehensive assessment of the Chinese military. The book analyzes the transition of the PLA from a mass-mobilization force to a professionalized, technology-driven military apparatus, utilizing official Chinese military publications and Western analytical frameworks to support its conclusions.

Experts in the field of Asian security studies frequently cite this text as a foundational reference for understanding the complexities of the Chinese military. Readers often note the technical density of the prose, which serves as a reliable resource for researchers and policy analysts alike.
