
Our century had been, in every sense, incredible. When it began, Britain ruled a world-wide empire and the United States played a little part in international affairs. No man had flown in a powered aircraft or listened to a radio; few haad ridden in a motor car or seen a moving picture. Medical skill was so rudimentary that the removal of an appendix was a very dangerous undertaking. The vast majority of people were poor, insecure and dominated by the ruling classes.
