Richard Willard Armour (July 15, 1906–February 28, 1989) was an American poet and author. Armour also wrote satirical books, such as Twisted Tales from Shakespeare, and his ersatz history of the United States, It All Started With Columbus. These books were typically filled with puns and plays on words, and gave the impression of someone who had not quite been paying attention in class, thus also getting basic facts not quite right, to humorous effect.
This work investigates the absurdity of historical narratives by intentionally misinterpreting the timeline of the United States. Richard Willard Armour, a prolific satirist and educator, employs a framework of deliberate ignorance and linguistic play to deconstruct the gravity of traditional historical texts. By presenting a series of distorted accounts, the author argues that the rigid memorization of historical facts often obscures the inherent humor and human fallibility found within the past.
