Much like her novels, Fanny Burney's personal writings provide astute observations of men and manners, often in a humorous vein. This selection of journals and letters, taken from the original twelve-volume edition edited by Hemlow, et al., follows Burney's career from her romantic marriageto an impoverished French émigré to her death some forty-six years later. Together, they form a continuous narrative of an adventurous life that included Burney's experience of political unrest, war, and exile--and, at times, idyllic happiness.
