This volume investigates the historical reliability and literary techniques employed by Arrian in his account of Alexander the Great. A. B. Bosworth, a distinguished scholar of the Hellenistic period, provides a rigorous examination of the text, comparing Arrian’s narrative against other primary sources and archaeological evidence. The work establishes a critical framework for understanding how Arrian synthesized earlier accounts to construct his portrayal of the Macedonian king.

Scholars and students of classical history regard this commentary as a foundational resource for the study of Arrian’s work. Readers frequently note the academic density of the prose, which is intended for those with a strong background in ancient history and the Greek language.
