Without diminishing Darwinâ€s achievement, this study aims to show that ‘his contribution was one link in a chain that extends back into antiquityâ€. Beginning with Aristotle and Empedocles, the authors argue that the idea of evolution had been around for centuries before Darwin published his theory of evolution by natural selection, and they describe how that theory has been improved upon, particularly by developments in genetics during the 20th century.
